For Those Who Fear Him Lack Nothing (Psalms 34:9)

Sermon on 3 July 2022 by Elder Daniel Lee

Introduction

Let us examine ourselves. We need many things in our lives, but many are ‘wants’ but not essential ‘needs’. When we see good things that others have, we want them too. These ‘wants’ are a reflection of self-centeredness. We are not satisfied with what we have in life. We always feel we are lacking something. We are always comparing ourselves against others. We do not have gratitude even though it is impossible to be better than others in every way.

Message

Fear the Lord, you his godly people, for those who fear him will have all they need. – Psalms 34:9

During Moses’ time, the Israelites in Egypt were doing hard labour. Through Moses, God performed ten miracles (disasters) in Egypt. The worst disaster was the tenth. All first borns were killed except for those of the Israelites who were instructed to smear their door posts with the blood of the ram, so that the Spirit of God would pass over their houses. Pharoah’s own son died, and he told the Israelites to leave Egypt. However, he regretted his decision later and had his soldiers give chase. Through Moses, God parted the Red Sea for the Israelites to cross safely, while drowning the Egyptians. All these miracles were seen first-hand by the Israelites. The Israelites followed Moses in the desert for 40 years. God provided for them. However, they were not satisfied. Many times, they wanted to stone Moses.

These are the terms of the covenant the Lord commanded Moses to make with the Israelites while they were in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Mount Sinai. Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them, “You have seen with your own eyes everything the Lord did in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to his whole country— all the great tests of strength, the miraculous signs, and the amazing wonders. But to this day the Lord has not given you minds that understand, nor eyes that see, nor ears that hear! For forty years I led you through the wilderness, yet your clothes and sandals did not wear out. You ate no bread and drank no wine or other alcoholic drink, but he provided for you so you would know that he is the Lord your God. – Deuteronomy 29:1-6

In the same way, we want good things from God. We want God to help us with many things. This is why we do not have the joy of the Lord. We do not align our hearts with God’s heart. We simply want God to satisfy our desires rather than seeking God’s will. If we have God in our hearts, the sword of the Holy Spirit will be with us. Do we really seek and understand God’s word? Do we love Him with all our hearts, our minds and our strength? Do we obey Him? If we ask according to God’s will, His promise is that it will be granted.

If anyone claims, “I am living in the light,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is still living in darkness. Anyone who loves a fellow believer is living in the light and does not cause others to stumble. But anyone who hates a fellow believer is still living and walking in darkness. Such a person does not know the way to go, having been blinded by the darkness. – 1 John 2:9-11

As Christians, we need to have contentment and gratitude. Let us not compare what we have with what others have. We need to cherish God’s blessing and love others. If we cannot obey God’s commandment to love one another, we cannot be His sheep.

How great is the goodness you have stored up for those who fear you. You lavish it on those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world. – Psalms 31:19

The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. – Psalms 23:1

This is the promise of God. If we really revere Him, we lack nothing. Do we fear God or do we demand Him to bless us? If we revere Him, His protection and blessings will exceed our expectations. God will create opportunities for you.

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. – Matthew 6:33

Jesus said He is the way, the truth and the life. If we seek His righteousness, what we need will be added unto us.

Closing

We need God’s word in our hearts and with His love, we share with others and we edify and encourage one another.
