Part 1: God has Spoken (Hebrews 1:1-4)

Sermon on 14 June 2026 by Pastor Justin

Introduction

The book of Hebrews urges believers to persevere in faith, hold firmly to their hope, and draw near to God through Christ. It shows us the supremacy of Christ; that He is the true fulfillment of the old testament. Christ is the ultimate revelation.

Message

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. - Hebrews 1:1-4

The phrase “sat down” (Hebrews 1:3) means completion. In John 19:30, Jesus said “it is finished”. We have been purged and sanctified by the precious blood of Jesus Christ on the cross. The book of Hebrews will give us a deeper understanding of Christ and bring us to the joy and perfection of our faith.

There are 5 solemn warnings about turning away from Christ:

(1) Danger of neglect (chapter 2)

(2) Danger of hardening the heart (chapter 3)

(3) Danger of fullness of hearing (chapter 5)

(4) Danger of drawing back (chapter 10)

(5) Danger of refusing God (chapter 12)

God wants us to go on to perfection (Hebrews 6:1) - to walk in the likeness of Christ.

Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, - Hebrews 6:1

Christ is greater than the angels, Moses, the Aaronic priesthood, and the law, because He brings a better covenant. Christ has spoken to us. We need to look to Jesus. Jesus is the final, conclusive, authoritative, and superior revelation of God.

1. God’s gradual revelation over time (Hebrews 1:1-2)

Jesus’ arrival represents God’s ultimate communication. God’s message is complete.

2. The supremacy of Christ’s revelation (Hebrews 1:2-3a)

has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person - Hebrews 1:2-3a

Jesus, the sun of righteousness, fully reveals God’s nature and fullness. He is the image of God. Even angels worship Him. Remain firmly anchored in Jesus.

3. Christ’s completed work of purification (Hebrews 1:3b-4)

When He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. - Hebrews 1:3b-4

Live in the freedom of knowing your sins are fully forgiven and reconciled through Christ’s finished work.

Closing

The book of Hebrews calls believers to remain firmly anchored in Jesus Christ. It is the final, conclusive, authoritative, and superior revelation of God. Let us respond. Seek His guidance, understanding, and transformative power daily. In Christ, we see the full picture of God’s character, will, and love. Let us embrace His light and revelation.
