Introduction
Hebrews 11 is called “the faith chapter”. It is about trusting God even when we cannot see the outcome. The world operates on the premise of “seeing is believing”. But the bible tells us that true faith is believing without seeing.
Message
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. - Hebrews 11:1
Chapter 11 challenges us to trust in God’s promises and find the courage to act despite unseen realities (Hebrews 11:39).
And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise, - Hebrews 11:39
Faith is not just believing - it is obeying, enduring, and moving forward (Hebrews 11:25). Faith is about choice. It is not just about believing. Moses chose to suffer, rather than enjoy life as the son of Pharoah’s daughter.
Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, - Hebrews 11:25
When we are struggling, and we have not yet seen healing or breakthrough, do we continue to have faith? Let us enter the hall of faith; have faith and trust in God’s promises.
1. Faith represents a firm assurance of what is unseen (Hebrews 11:1)
Faith is choosing to trust God amid uncertainty (Hebrews 11:8). Abraham chose to obey even though he did not know where he was going. He was sure of God’s command. Your relationship with God is important. If you do not read the bible or pray, you will not have a spirit of discernment even if the Holy Spirit speaks to you. If you have a relationship with God, you will know when God is leading you and that it is not from the devil.
By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, now knowing where he was going. - Hebrews 11:8
What is unseen to us is never unknown to God (2 Corinthians 5:7; Hebrews 10:38).
2. Heroes who showed courageous faith (Hebrews 11:4-31)
Enoch walked by courageous faith. Noah obeyed by faith, not knowing what a flood is. Abraham went out not knowing where he was going. Rahab acted by faith.
Hebrews 11:4-31 shows us that true faith is not only something we believe - it is something we live. Faith keeps moving forward even when the outcome is not yet visible (Hebrews 11:6).
But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. - Hebrews 11:6
Faith is waiting. It is not doing nothing. Waiting is about aligning with God. Faith means obeying before understanding, moving before seeing the path, and trusting before the situation changes. Faith does not mean we know what will happen next. It means we know the one who holds what happens next.
3. Endurance through faith (Hebrews 11:32-40)
Faith does not always make life easier, but it gives us strength to keep going (Hebrews 11:37).
They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented - - Hebrews 11:37
Real faith is to keep trusting, keep enduring, keep obeying, keep waiting. Even if the journey is difficult, do not give up (Romans 8:18).
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. - Romans 8:18
