Part 8: Loving Discipline: God’s Training for Holiness(Hebrews 12:4-11)

Introduction

God loves you. He wants to train you, for His eternal purpose. Every challenge and suffering will expose whether we are faithful and obedient.

Message

You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the Lord He chastens, and scourges every one whom He receives.” If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. - Hebrews 12:4-11

God shapes us. Discipline is a sign of God’s love, guiding us towards holiness and maturity. It is God’s will for His children to grow spiritually (2 Peter 3:18). It is God’s will for His children to grow in righteousness and peace (Hebrews 12:11; James 3:18).

1. Understand God’s discipline (Hebrews 12:4-6)

Develop endurance and growth in the believer (Proverbs 3:11-12)  

My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, nor detest His correction; for whom the Lord loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights. - Proverbs 3:11-12

Keep trials in perspective as a shaping tool in His hands.

2. Understand God’s discipline as a pathway to holiness (Hebrews 12:10)

God’s discipline will shape us for eternal purposes (1 Peter 1:15-16).

But as He who called you is Holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” - 1 Peter 1:15-16

Keep trials in perspective as a shaping tool for eternal purpose (Romans 5:3-4).

3. Understand God’s discipline produces the fruit of righteousness (Hebrews 12:11)

God’s discipline will yield a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who persevere (James 1:2-4).

Keep trials in perspective as a shaping tool to remain steadfast in faith and character development (2 Peter 1:5-8).

Closing

Understanding God’s discipline changes your perspective on the challenges you face. Applying the principles of God’s loving discipline and training for holiness helps our spiritual life grow closer to God.

We must embrace God’s loving discipline as it is God’s training for holiness in us.
