Acts 2:42-47 - “All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.”
Growth will only happen when it’s planted in the soil of fellowship. It is a command for us to live in communities. The early church continued steadfastly, were together, and continued daily. Not occasional activities, but a habit of fellowship. Faithfulness begins from the heart. Check your heart if you are really experiencing the grace of God.
koinōnia means fellowship, sharing in common, communion. A shared life, partnership, and mutual participation. Fellowship usually comes with the Word, prayer, and food.
Deeply connected spiritual family
A growing community in fellowship
Acts 2:47 - “all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.”
Important lessons about fellowship:
Fellowship is not optional (1 Corinthians 1:9)
Fellowship is essential for survival, growth, and witness
Fellowship will help us and strengthen us in this world that is not pleasing to the Lord. God calls His people to gather regularly and to share life together.
Romans 12:4-5 - “Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.”
Hebrews 10:24-25 - “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.”
The World will tell many Christians to be independent. But God calls us to be interdependent with one another and only dependent on God.
Fellowship reflects the heart of God
Acts 2:42-45 - “All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.”
John 13:35 - “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.””
The Church is God’s table where grace is shared and love is visible. Love is so evident. You can see love. You train it with your spiritual muscle. Fellowship begins when we move from attending church to truly belonging to one another.
2. Fellowship strengthens us in the struggle
Galatians 6:2 - “Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.”
Mark 2:4 - “They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus.”
Fellowship will not remove our difficulties but it strengthens and gives us comfort. Community is God’s way of lifting us when our strength fails.
3. Fellowship propels us toward mission
Hebrews 10:24-25 - “Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.”
Acts 9:27 - “Then Barnabas brought him to the apostles and told them how Saul had seen the Lord on the way to Damascus and how the Lord had spoken to Saul. He also told them that Saul had preached boldly in the name of Jesus in Damascus.”
A healthy community will challenge us to serve, give, and love. Run from a community that causes divide as it is not according to the Word.
4. Fellowship is a habit, not an option
Acts 2:46 - “They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—”
Growth follows commitment to consistent fellowship. The early church didn’t just believe the gospel - they lived it out together.
Let’s be intentional in cultivating the spiritual habit of prayer, word, simplicity, and fellowship. Let our family and church be marked by personal growth in Christ and by sharing faith, joy and mission.
Amen.
