God Loves Us As He Loves Jesus (John 17:23)

Updated: Dec 26, 2019

Sermon on Sunday 9 June 2019 by Pastor Justin

In John chapter 17, Jesus Christ prayed for the disciples and believers to be united as one. Jesus said if you call me Lord, why are you not doing what I instructed you to do? Because we are His disciples, we must follow Him.

John 17:20-21 - “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.“

John 17:26 - “I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” When the world sees you, they should see the love of Christ.

John 17:23 - I in them and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

Our Father is the vine. We are the branches. We must abide in Him, and we will bear fruit.

Jeremiah 17:8 - He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.

When you focus on something, it expands. When you focus on positive things, when you focus on the word, you become more spiritual. But if you focus on negative things, the things you do not have, you will always feel that you never have enough.

How much does God love us? He loves us as much as He loves Christ. When you know this, you are secure. When you walk through fires, the flames will not scorch you.

How do you know you love God? Love your neighbours. If you say you love God but hate your brother, you are are liar.

When Jesus Christ was resurrected, He told Mary Magdalene to go and tell His brethren. He put Himself as our brother. Even though Jesus was the Son of God, He had humility. He could do all things but gave up His power. God is a loving Father. He wants a relationship with you. You must believe. The bible says you have to believe first, then things will happen. Your attitude in doing things must reflect your faith. You cannot wait for things to happen before you believe. Believe that the Father loves you as He loves Jesus. This is the greatest truth.

John 6:35-36 - Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe.”

John 6:40 - “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

John 20:17 - Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’”

2 Corinthians 6:18 - “I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the LORD Almighty.”

1. He will help us as He helped Jesus.

Isaiah 43:1-2 - But now, this is what the Lord says - He who created you, O Jacob, He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.

2. He will care for us as much as He cared for Jesus.

3. He will be as interested in planning the details of our daily life as He was in planning Jesus’ life.

The Father loves you so much that He protects you and gives you the ability to do all things. He plans every single detail for you.

All these are true for you too but only if you believe.

1 John 5:4 - for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.

If you don’t believe, if you don’t have faith, you cannot overcome anything. You will keep asking “why?”. Have faith in God’s perfect love for you. The answer to our security is in the love of God.

Matthew 10:30-31 - And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Matthew 6:28 - “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labour or spin.”

Romans 8:32 - He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all - how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?

Compare this with Romans 8:38-39 - For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

You can do all things if you believe.

John 14:17-18 - the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

God forgives you for your sins. But you must have victory over sin. How do you do this? Abide in Him. You cannot do this on your own. Believe that He is your Father who loves you. Your security must be in the love of God.

My Father is Your Father.

Matthew 6:9 - This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

John 20:17 - Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’”

John 1:18 - No one has ever seen God, but God the one and only, who is at the Father’s side, has made him known.

Remember that you have a Father, the one who created heaven and earth, who loves you as much as He loves Jesus. Take this truth seriously in your daily life. The most important thing for us to know is God is our Father.
