Sermon on 3 October 2021 by Ps Justin
Introduction
You are the light of the world. You are to give light. The fruit of the light is righteousness. The fruit of the light is the truth. Who is the truth? Jesus Christ is the truth.
Message
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. – Matthew 5:14-16
Luke 9:25 tells us what good is there to gain the world yet lose himself? We are living in a temporal world. Therefore, fix our eyes on things that are eternal. Many people are still living in darkness. We are the light of the world. The light will guide you wherever you go, if you are willing to follow Christ. We are His vessel. You carry the fragrance of Christ wherever you go.
We are the body of Christ. Present ourselves as instruments of righteousness of God.
And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. - Romans 6:13
1. You are the light of the world
We reflect the light of our Lord Jesus Christ. We carry the glory of God.
But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. – 2 Corinthians 3:18
We need to walk in the light. Do not walk in the way that is no different from the world. Walk without blame, dispute or complaint. Philippians 2:14-16 tells us we are the light in this dying world.
Jesus came to shine the ultimate light, the light of salvation in our lives. Good works is the fruit of the light. Anyone who walks in the truth with good works shines for Christ. And people will know you belong to Christ. You live as a new man, with the fruit of the Spirit. God’s moments are times that God has put in your day to give him glory.
Shine for Christ every moment. Your life should not be compartmentalised, where you are the light only during certain times. Do it every moment. Let anyone who crosses paths with you see this. Let people see that you are different, let them see the fruits of love, peace and joy in you.
2. The light of Christ illuminates our hearts
We cannot be effective without the light of Christ in us. Genesis tells us that God commanded light. Now the light shines into our hearts. If you allow, light will enter.
For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. - 2 Corinthians 4:6
This is why Christians do not want to sin. We want to repent and return to the path of righteousness. The book of Ephesians, chapter 5, tells us how to walk in light, in love, and in wisdom.
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light. - Ephesians 5:8
Romans 12:2 tells us not to conform to the pattern of the world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Take no part in the unfruitful works of the darkness. When you have light, you will have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus purifies us (1 John 1:7).
Be efficient, be effective, and be efficacious in preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God as His righteousness vessel. Being efficient means doing the right thing, being effective means using the right method. Efficacy is being efficient and effective, having the right result as intended by the will of God. When you are the light, you will naturally be efficient and effective.
Closing
We are instruments of Jesus Christ. We do not need to try to be the light, because we are already the light. We are seen by everyone. We must shine and show people the fruit of the light – the good works in us. Let us remember we are His instruments for righteousness.
“I, the Lord, have called You in righteousness, And will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the Gentiles, - Isaiah 42:6
