Will You Make Space For The Kingdom In You? (1 John 2:15-17)

Sermon on 12 May 2024 by Pastor Justin

Introduction

The word ‘kingdom’ is not a place. It is in the presence of God. The kingdom of God is neither here nor there. It is within you (Luke 17:21). The kingdom is about righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17).

Message

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world - the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life - is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. - 1 John 2:15-17

The “world” does not mean the physical space. It refers to the values that go against God. There are three things that will constantly tempt you. The “lust of the eyes” mean the material things that we covet. The “lust of the flesh” refers to sensual pleasures. The “pride of life” refers to being proud of accomplishments and things considered success in the world.

The world is under the influence of the devil (1 John 5:19). Fix your eyes on the Lord. Do not get distracted. What matters most to us is Jesus Christ. We make the decision each day to value and love Jesus above all else. If you do not prioritise time with God, you will start to drift into the darkness. Make space for the kingdom and you will not be subject to the rule and influence of the world.

Christians who have submitted themselves to God’s authority are in the kingdom of God. Do you want to claim the promises of the kingdom today? Submit to God’s authority (James 4:7). Present your bodies as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1-2). Put off your old man, concerning your former conduct (Ephesians 4:22). Don’t crave for the things of this world, and come under the lordship of Jesus in His kingdom. Correcting our love and cravings is the first step to living in the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33).

Correct the craving of the three lusts. Otherwise, the devil will continue to kill, steal, and destroy. Have a deep abiding intimacy and connection with God. All throughout the bible, God shows us how to live as He desires us to live. We need to make space for the kingdom every moment as Christians. Ask yourself whether your actions reflect yourself as a disciple of Christ. Ask yourself whether the decisions you make align with the word of God.

Closing

Say “no” to the things of this world. Say “yes” to the love of God and the things of God by making way and space for His kingdom and King Jesus.
